About The Program
Dance Off! is a government-funded initiative (Department of Education and Communities) which has been responsible for running annual residential dance camps for students in NSW public schools since 2008. The ‘Dance Off!’ Camp is for gifted & talented dance students in Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6 Primary School) and Stage 4-6 (Years 7 to 12 Secondary School)
Dance off! began with the aim of offering students in Western Sydney a quality dance experience to inspire and engage. The camp was a success! In 2009, the program expanded, creating a stronger team and the creation of a second senior camp. The program has continued to grow each year! Dance Off! offers a mentorship program for previous Dance Off! students who have finished high school and have entered into tertiary studies. Students are provided with leadership opportunities as well as insight into the management of a large -scale dance program.
Selected students will be chosen to form a Dance Off Troupe through the audition process at the Dance Off! senior camp. All Years 7 – 11 students in public schools will be eligible, with various performance opportunities occurring within the following year. In the three-day residential camp, students participate in dance workshops with qualified and experienced dance instructors as well as taking part in choreographic sessions.
At 2:00pm on the third afternoon the students present a performance to an audience of parents, principals and teachers followed by an awards ceremony. The aim of the program is to show promising students a side of dance they have never experienced before.
The camps are held in Merroo Christian Conference Centre in Kurrajong. The staff at the venue have been trained in all aspects of safety and assist the Dance Off Staff with the daily activities of the program as well as the catering. Attached is a Safety Management Plan for Merroo. Please visit their site for further information.
